Topic: Waiting For The Coming Messiah
Opening Prayer: My dear heavenly Father, as I study your word, let it be a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.
Scripture: Luke 2:21-38
Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
When the baby Jesus was presented to God in the Temple, Mary and Joseph met two old people – Simeon (vs.25-35) and Anna (vs.36-38). Notice the strong testimony we have about Simeon (v.25), and the joy and satisfaction revealed by his song. The Holy Spirit ensured he did not miss his appointment after waiting for so long (vs.27-28). Note what he says about Jesus in vs.30-32 and to Mary (vs.34-35). V.34 is worth a special mention. The coming of Jesus into the world means different things to different people – a time to rejoice for some (Simeon), but a time of fear mixed with hatred for others (Herod). Some respond to Him in faith and receive His peace while for some others, He is a stumbling block. They reject Him and are in turn rejected by Him.
This leads to their downfall. What does the coming of Jesus mean to you? It is good to yearn to be intercessors. Anna was one par excellence. Notice the sacrifice she had to make (v.37). The Lord used her in a very special way (v.38). When we spend quality time in worship, prayer and fasting, we are enormously enriched spiritually, and the Lord can use us for His glory. What lesson(s) can Christian widows learn from Anna (v. 37 cf. 1 Tim. 5: 9 – 10)? For further study: For the various ceremonies in vs.21-22 see Genesis 17:10-12; Exodus 13:2,12 and Leviticus 12:1-6.
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Closing Prayer
• Father, help me to be devoted and watchful as I await the return of your Son, Jesus Christ.
• Thank God for Jesus who by His death on the cross, took away our curse and granted us access into the blessings of Abraham.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with Esther 2:17; Zech. 1-4; Luke 22:47-71
