Introduction to the Book of Deuteronomy
Introduction
The opening verses (Deuteronomy 1:1-5) of the Book of Deuteronomy give us the summary and the purpose of the whole book. The verses explain the why, what, when, where, and who the book is all about. The people should have settled in their possessions 38 years earlier but because of the unbelief of the older generation, they could not make it then until they wasted in the wilderness. As at this time, only Joshua and Caleb survived the various destructions that came upon the people. Moses himself was not going to lead the conquest of the land. He will soon be taken away from them. The purpose of this book, therefore, is not only to remind the people of God’s past dealings with them but also to give them the 10 Commandments again (Deuteronomy 5, hence the title of the book which means, “the second law” or “the Law a second time”), and warn them against rebellion that destroyed their fathers.

Scripture Union Daily Guide 12th August 2026 – OUTLINE
Eleven days is the journey from Mount Sinai to Kadesh Barnea and about the same from Kadesh Barnea to the plains of Moab where the Israelites are now. Yet it took them 40 years to get there because of unbelief!
Observe how Moses repeats all that the Lord had commanded him concerning them; no more, no less (Deuteronomy 1:3). When was this speech given (Deuteronomy 1:4)? This victory, still fresh in the minds of the people, was important as it was the first step towards conquering Canaan.
Note that it is God Himself who orders Moses and the Israelites to leave Horeb (Mount Sinai) in faith and take the land of the promise (Deuteronomy 1:6-8). This culminates in the fulfilment of God’s promise to Abraham and his descendants.
God also multiplied the people of Israel according to His promise to Abraham. See how this demands for a special organization (Deuteronomy 1:12-18). Moses appointed leaders to help him bear the responsibility of governing the gigantic number of Israelites. What qualities did the leaders need to have?
