Scripture Union Daily Guide 13th August 2026 – OUTLINE

Identify at least three ways in the text that speaks of God’s care for the Israelites. Notice how the people still complain despite all the goodness and faithfulness of the Lord towards them. They forget how the Lord looked after them throughout the long and difficult journey from Mount Sinai (Deuteronomy 1:19). They refuse to go with Him into the land of milk and honey He had chosen for them despite Moses’ encouragement (Deuteronomy 1:21)

After the exploration of the land by the spies, they prefer to follow the 10 unfaithful spies who gave a bad report rather than believe in the promise of God reminded by Caleb and Joshua. See how Moses encourages them again (Deuteronomy 1:29-31) but to no avail!

Notice how their rebellious attitude brings about God’s anger and punishment. The constant stubbornness, unbelief and disobedience of the generation of adults who came out of Egypt were the reason why they were not allowed to enter the promised land but perished in the wilderness, except for Joshua and Caleb.

The people to whom Moses is speaking now are the children born in the wilderness. He brings to this new generation of faith a reminder of God’s law as they are about to enter the Promised Land.

For further study
Read Numbers 13-14 for the full story of the spies.

What next:
Do you sometimes complain like the Israelites? What will you now do differently? How can you show your gratefulness instead?

Closing Prayer
May I never miss your blessings, dear Lord.
