Treasured possession.

The Hebrew word is segullāh — one of the rarest words in the Old Testament, appearing only eight times across the entire Hebrew Bible. In the ancient Near East, the segullāh referred to the personal treasure of a king — not the general royal treasury, not the accumulated wealth of the kingdom, but the collection of things the king kept closest, valued most personally, prized above everything else in his possession. The items in a king’s segullāh were not functional or merely valuable by weight. They were precious to him. He kept them near. They were his.

And that is the word God uses for His people.

Not a useful tool. Not a managed resource. Not even a beloved nation in the general sense. His segullāh — the thing He holds closest, the possession He personally prizes, the treasure He keeps near not because it earns its place but because He has decided to treasure it. The choosing here is entirely from God’s side. In the very next verses, Moses clarifies it plainly: God did not choose Israel because they were the greatest of peoples — they were the smallest. He chose them because He loved them and because of His covenant faithfulness to their ancestors (Deuteronomy 7:7-8). The choosing was not based on merit. It was based on love. And love chose to treasure.

You are not valued because of what you produce. You are valued because God looked at you — across all the peoples of the earth — and chose to treasure you.

The verse also calls them holy — and the holiness here is not primarily about moral performance. The Hebrew root of holy means to be cut off, to be set apart, to be made distinct. You are holy to the LORD your God — the holiness is defined by the relationship. Whose you are determines what you are. You have been separated from other allegiances and set apart for Him. The holy person is not someone who has achieved a perfect moral record. The holy person is someone who belongs to God — whose identity is shaped by that belonging more than by anything else.

This identity was not left in the Old Testament. Peter takes the exact same language and places it over the church: “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession” (1 Peter 2:9). The word he uses — peripoiēsis — carries the same meaning as segullāh: a prized, personally valued possession. Peter is saying: everything God declared over Israel in Deuteronomy 7:6, He now declares over everyone who is in Christ. Chosen. Holy. Treasured.

Notice the order in which the verse gives these declarations. First the identity — you are — and then the instructions for living follow from it. This is the pattern of Scripture: identity before instruction. How you live flows from who you are. When you know you are treasured by the God of the universe, it changes the ground you stand on. You do not live to earn a value that has already been assigned. You do not perform for approval that has already been given. You live from a place of being chosen — and that changes everything about how you carry yourself through an ordinary day.

A king’s treasured possession is not left exposed or unguarded. It is kept close, protected, prized. The God who calls you His segullāh has not placed you out at the perimeter. You are near. You are held. You are His.

That is who you are today.

Morning Prayer

Father, I receive this verse this morning not as a theology to agree with but as an identity to live from. You have called me Your treasured possession — Your segullāh. Not because of anything I have achieved or earned or produced. Because You looked across all the peoples of the earth and chose to treasure me. That is staggering. Let it be more than a fact I file away. Let it actually change the ground I stand on today.

Where I have been living as though I need to earn my worth — performing for approval I already have, striving for a value that has already been declared — let this verse land in that place and settle it. I am chosen. I am holy. I am Yours. Those are not aspirations. They are declarations You have made over me, and I receive them this morning.

Let the knowledge that I am Your treasured possession shape how I walk through this day. Not with arrogance — but with the quiet, settled dignity of someone who knows they are prized by the only One whose opinion is final. Let it make me generous with others, because I am not grasping for what You have already given. Let it make me secure, because what You have declared over me cannot be taken by what people say or circumstances suggest.

I am Yours. Today and every day. In Jesus’ name — Amen.

Reflection for Today

  • Segullāh was the king’s personal, privately prized treasure — not the general treasury but what he valued most and kept closest. What does it mean to you personally that God uses this word for His people — not “useful servant” or even “beloved nation” but the thing He personally prizes and keeps near? How does that specific image change how you think about your relationship with God?
  • God did not choose Israel because they were great — they were the smallest of peoples. The choosing was based entirely on His love and His faithfulness, not on anything they brought to the table. Where are you still trying to earn or deserve the value God has already declared over you? What would it look like to receive the choosing rather than continue to work for it?
  • The verse gives identity before instruction — you are His treasured possession, and the rest follows from that. In your daily life, does your behaviour flow from an identity that is already secure, or are you still living as though you need to establish your worth through what you do? What is one area where knowing you are already treasured could free you from performing for an approval you already have?
