TOPIC: No Longer the Old Way: The Life That Only the Spirit Can Give

Bible Verse of the Day

“But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.” — Romans 7:6 (NIV)

Daily Devotional Message

Two words at the beginning of this verse carry the entire weight of the gospel.

But now.

Paul has spent the opening of Romans 7 painting a picture most believers recognize with uncomfortable familiarity — the exhausting life of trying to be good enough. The law came, desire increased, failure multiplied, guilt compounded. If you have ever prayed the same repentance prayer for the same sin more times than you can count, you have lived Romans 7. If you have ever felt the gap between who you know you should be and who you keep discovering yourself to be, you have felt what Paul was describing.

And then those two words arrive like a door swinging open onto different air: But now.

The gospel is not a better version of the old system. It is not an upgrade to the written code, not more rules with more grace layered on top to help you keep them. Romans 7:6 is Paul declaring a complete change of covenant, a total shift in the entire basis of how you relate to God. You are not managing your sin better. You are dead to what once bound you.

Paul has used the analogy of marriage to explain it (vv. 1–4). A woman married to one husband is bound to that covenant for life. But when her husband dies, she is fully released — not partially, not conditionally, but entirely. She is free to belong to another. And that is precisely what has happened to the believer. You died with Christ. The old master — the law as a system of external obligation, guilt, and condemnation — has no more jurisdiction over you than a dead husband has over his widow. You now belong to another: the risen Christ, through whom you bear fruit for God.

This is the thing religion often forgets: you were not saved to try harder. You were saved to live differently — from the inside out.

Look at the contrast Paul draws:

The Old Way

  • External obligation
  • Written code, letters on stone
  • Produces guilt and striving
  • Power to diagnose sin
  • Letter that kills (2 Cor 3:6)
  • Serves from fear

The New Way

  • Internal transformation
  • Spirit written on the heart
  • Produces life and freedom
  • Power to overcome sin
  • Spirit that gives life (2 Cor 3:6)
  • Serves from love

The Greek word Paul uses for “new” here is not neos — which means recent, the same thing but younger. He uses kainotēs — a word that means radical novelty, a freshness that is qualitatively different in kind, not merely in age. This is not God renovating what existed before. This is a new creation entirely (2 Corinthians 5:17). When you were born again, you did not get a moral renovation. You received a new nature, new desires, a new Spirit — the Spirit of the living God dwelling inside you.

And the word for “serve” — douleuō — means to serve as a bond-servant, with total allegiance. Paul is not describing reluctant compliance. He is describing a whole-hearted, love-driven devotion. The difference is not in the behavior but in the source. Old way service comes from “I have to — or face consequences.” New way service flows from “I want to — because I have been completely transformed.”

This is the question Romans 7:6 places before you this morning: which way are you serving God?

Because many believers are technically in the New Covenant but functionally living in the old one. They are carrying guilt about sin that was already covered. They are striving for a righteousness they were already given. They are trying to earn a love that was already extended without condition. They are exhausted — not because God demands too much, but because they are using the wrong engine.

You cannot live the new life on old fuel.

The Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you (Romans 8:11). The same Spirit who moved over the face of the deep at creation, who descended as fire on Pentecost, who transforms, convicts, comforts, and empowers — He is not outside you, waiting to be invited. He is within you, ready to do what the written code never could: change you from the inside so that obedience becomes not a burden but an expression of who you now are.

But now. You are no longer bound to the old way.

Walk in the new one.

Morning Prayer

Father, I come before You this morning and I receive these two words as a declaration over my life: But now. Whatever I was before — whatever cycle I was trapped in, whatever guilt I was carrying, whatever exhausting version of religion I was living — that is no longer my address.

I confess that I have not always lived from the new way. I have carried guilt You already removed. I have strived for approval You already gave. I have served You at times out of fear rather than love, out of obligation rather than overflow. Forgive me — not because I need to earn forgiveness again, but because I want nothing between me and the full experience of who You have already made me.

Holy Spirit, I invite You to take full authority in me today. Not as a guest — as the Lord of this house. Lead me, govern me, empower me from the inside. Where I have been trying to manage my conduct by willpower alone, come and do what only You can do: transform the desire, renew the mind, make obedience natural rather than forced.

Let me serve You today not from the old way of the written code — not from duty, guilt, or performance — but in the new way of the Spirit. Let what flows from my life today be the overflow of a heart that has been changed, not the effort of a will trying to keep up with a standard it cannot reach alone.

I am dead to what once bound me. I declare that today over every old pattern, every old cycle, every old self-condemnation that tries to pull me back into what You already released me from. I am alive to God in Christ Jesus — and I will walk in that aliveness today.

In Jesus’ name — Amen.

Reflection for Today

  • Paul describes two ways of serving God — from the old written code or from the new way of the Spirit. Honestly, which one has been powering your walk with God lately? Are you serving from love and transformation, or from guilt, duty, and the pressure not to fail?
  • The Greek word kainotēs — “newness” — means something qualitatively different in kind, not just age. What would it look like for you to relate to God today as a genuinely new creation, rather than a repaired version of your old self?
  • “But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released.” Is there an area of your life where you are still living as though bound to something Christ has already freed you from — a guilt, a label, a cycle, an old identity? What does it mean to actually walk in that release today?
