TOPIC: More Than You Can Imagine

Bible Verse of the Day

“However, as it is written: ‘What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived’ — the things God has prepared for those who love him —” — 1 Corinthians 2:9 (NIV)

Daily Devotional Message

Paul exhausts three human faculties and still cannot describe what he is trying to describe.

Daily Devotional for Today (August 13, 2026) | Morning Prayer & Bible

He reaches first for sight — no eye has seen. Everything observable, everything visible to even the most attentive human gaze. Not enough. Then he reaches for hearing — no ear has heard. All the testimony, all the teaching, all the information ever communicated from person to person. Still not enough. Then he reaches for the imagination — no human mind has conceived. The heart has not been able to ascend to it, has not been able to generate it through even the most creative and expansive thinking. Even the best human imagination, given unlimited time, could not arrive here on its own.

And then — the thing that all three faculties cannot reach: the things God has prepared for those who love him.

Notice the tense: has prepared. Past. Already done. God is not in the process of working out what He will do. He has already prepared it. The preparation is complete. It exists. The only question is whether it will be received — and the verse immediately answers that question in the very next verse (v.10): “these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit.” The inexpressible has been expressed. The Spirit is the bridge between what has been prepared and what can be received.

This verse is often quoted as though it speaks only of heaven — of the glories waiting for us after death. And it certainly includes that. But the context of 1 Corinthians 2 is broader. Paul is speaking about the wisdom of God that the rulers of this age did not understand — the wisdom that led them to crucify the Lord of glory, not understanding what the cross was actually doing. He is saying that the deep things of God, the wisdom of the cross, the realities that the Spirit reveals to those in relationship with God — all of this is part of what no natural human faculty could have generated or discovered on its own. The prepared things include present spiritual realities as much as future ones.

Whatever your current picture of your life looks like — whatever your eyes have seen and your ears have heard and your mind has been able to conceive — that is not the full picture of what God has prepared.

The condition of receiving is worth sitting with: for those who love him. Not the most intelligent. Not the most theologically educated. Not the most experienced. Those who love Him. Love is the door that opens what no natural faculty can enter. This is consistent with everything Paul has been arguing in these chapters — the wisdom of God does not flow through human cleverness but through relationship. The person who loves God receives access to what the person who merely studies God cannot reach through study alone.

Ephesians 3:20 puts it the same way from a different angle: God is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine. The ceiling of human asking and human imagination — impressive as those ceilings are — is not the ceiling of what God has prepared. He operates above and beyond both. Which means every scenario you have been able to construct in your mind about what your future holds, about what God might do in your situation, about what restoration or breakthrough or provision might look like — that is not the outer limit of what has been prepared. It is only as far as your imagination can go. God has gone further.

Whatever you are currently seeing — whatever evidence exists in your circumstances right now — is a partial picture. What has been prepared exceeds what has been revealed to your natural faculties. The eye does not have the full report. The ear does not have the full report. The mind does not have the full report. Only the Spirit does.

And the Spirit lives in those who love God.

There is more prepared for you than you have yet been able to see.

Morning Prayer

Father, I receive this verse this morning as an act of trust — trust that what You have prepared exceeds what I have been able to see, hear, or imagine. My eyes have reported one thing. My ears have received a certain kind of news. My mind has constructed what feels like a realistic picture of where things are and where they are going. And this verse tells me: that is not the whole picture.

I choose today to live beyond the limits of my natural perception. Not in denial of what is real — but in faith that You have prepared things that have not yet entered any of the channels through which I normally receive information. What has been prepared is already done. It exists. And the Spirit who reveals the deep things of God is already at work in me, moving me toward what I cannot yet see.

Where my imagination has set a ceiling on what You might do — take me above it. Where my experience has defined what is possible — let Your preparation redefine it. Where I have been discouraged by what my eyes have seen — remind me that the eye has not seen everything that has been prepared.

I love You. And that, according to this verse, is the condition for receiving what cannot be reached any other way. I open myself to it today. In Jesus’ name — Amen.

Reflection for Today

  • Paul exhausts sight, hearing, and imagination — all three fall short of what God has prepared. In what area of your life have you been treating your own perception — what you can currently see or imagine — as the final word on what is possible? How does this verse challenge you to hold that perception more loosely?
  • “God has prepared” — past tense, already done. The preparation is complete and exists whether you can see it yet or not. How does knowing the preparation is already finished — not being worked out, already prepared — change how you carry your uncertainty about what God will do in your situation?
  • The access to what has been prepared is given to “those who love him” — not the most intelligent or educated, but those who love God. Verse 10 says the Spirit reveals these things. What is the connection between loving God, being filled with the Spirit, and receiving understanding that the natural mind cannot generate? How are you cultivating that love and that openness to the Spirit today?
