Babylon, once an instrument in God’s hand, had, through her pride and high–handedness, become so detestable before God that he planned nothing less than total destruction for her. Indeed, God said he was her enemy and would fight her until she was no more. Note the way her oppressors described her (v. 34), and what she did not only to Israel, but to many nations of the earth (vv.49–50).
Babylon had obviously elevated herself beyond an acceptable level. She had no regard for the feelings of her captives. Babylon was very rich and powerful. She was seen as a mighty invincible power, but her destruction was to come suddenly and without remedy. Sometimes, we see some individuals who appear to be so highly placed, powerful and eminent in several ways of reckoning just plummeting down to the ground at the height of their fame and power.
There are many possible reasons for this. One obvious reason could be pride and gross disobedience to God. Christians must be particularly careful to discharge their responsibilities with wisdom, humility and
