TOPIC: Time for God’s Judgement

Opening Prayer: Help me dear Lord to meet with you as I meditate on your word in Jesus name

SCRIPTURE: AMOS 8:1-14

Question(s) for Reflection
• Q 1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Q5: Is there any warning for me to heed?

The basket of ripe fruits (v.1) shows that it is harvest time; and a time to differentiate the wheat from the weed (cf. Matthew 13: 30). It was time for judgment for Israel (v.2)!

The crime of Israel (vs.4-6) can be summed up as the oppression of the poor and powerless in society. It is not that wealth or being wealthy is wrong but gaining wealth in an unjust and unscrupulous way is the issue. The problem was the pursuit of wealth with no regard for honesty or compassion for the needy. Even religion was resented if it hindered trade (v.5a). So, the society was ripe for judgment.

Vs.7-14: God’s judgment would be nationwide: an earthquake; the reversal of worldly enjoyments; the unsatisfied hunger and thirst for God’s word; and the realisation that false religion would no longer satisfy human need.
How is v.6 practised in our society today?

Slavery may have been abolished in the world but alas, it is still practised in subtle ways in Africa: the inhuman treatment and ridiculous reward of domestic servants, preventing school-aged children of the poor from going to school to look after the children of another family so both rich parents can work and further increase the family income.

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
Pray for grace to be different and show Christian love to those serving you.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with Numbers 24:5
“How goodly are thy tents, O Jacob, and thy tabernacles, O Israel!”
