COMMAND YOUR DAY
Friday, January 12, 2024
TOPIC: WHERE YOUR HEART IS
MEMORY VERSE: Matt. 6:21: “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also”.
READING: Matt. 6:19-21.
MESSAGE: The Lord is speaking to someone He loves this morning. You have all the qualifications to make you succeed and earn a name in your chosen profession but you are presently at a loss as to whether or not to heed the call of God. Your case is like that of Jerome, one of the four ‘Doctors of the Early Church’ (AD 345-420). After acquiring a solid secular education, Jerome decided to renounce secular life and lead a life of contemplation. He moved to Aquila in Italy in pursuit of a solitary ascetic life. He was also devoted to chastity. Later, he moved to Antioch (Syria) with his entire secular library.
One day, while recuperating from a fever, Jerome had a dream. He saw himself standing before the throne of God. He was accused of not being a Christian but a disciple of Cicero, the great philosopher. He was shocked and asked why. He was told by the judge, “Where your heart is, there is your treasure”. The judge thereafter ordered that he should be flogged. Jerome pleaded for mercy and promised never to read worldly books again and he was released.
After this dream, Jerome threw away his secular library of valuable treasure and devoted himself entirely to the study of Christian books. He moved to Bethlehem where he established a Monastery and a Convent. He was popularly known as The Scholar of Bethlehem. Today, Jerome is better known as the Translator who produced the Vulgate, the official Catholic version of the Bible. Worldly knowledge is like worldly treasure, it does not last.
To lay up treasures in heaven is to consecrate fully one’s service to God and help in the work of the kingdom. A cup of cold water given to a thirsty man in the right spirit will be rewarded in heaven. Do you have a call of God? Are you trying to weigh your call against the economic loss you would suffer by answering the call? Pray to have a vision like that of Jerome. It is good to lay up treasures in heaven for there your heart shall be in perfect peace and rest.
