Daily Devotional for Today (August 15, 2026) | Morning Prayer & Bible

Not in the morning when the other women came — the cool hours when the well was busy and the conversation was easy. She came at the hottest part of the day, alone, when no one else would be there. Jacob’s well was reliable. It had been there for generations. It gave her what she needed — for a few hours, until the thirst returned and she had to come back again. Tomorrow. And the day after. The same walk. The same bucket. The same temporary relief.

Jesus was waiting at the well when she arrived. And before the conversation was done, He had named something she had never said out loud: she was thirsty for far more than water. Five marriages. A current relationship without the security of commitment. The noon-time visit that told its own story of shame and isolation. She kept returning to things that gave her something — and then left her needing more. The well was just the most recent version of a pattern that had been running through her entire life.

And Jesus said: everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again.

That is not a criticism. It is a diagnosis — and it is true of every well that is not Him. The relationship that was supposed to complete you — thirsty again. The achievement that was supposed to finally be enough — thirsty again. The approval you worked for, the comfort you reached for, the distraction you turned to — thirsty again, thirsty again, thirsty again. Not because those things are all wrong but because they were never designed to permanently satisfy a soul-level thirst that only God can reach.

Jesus is not offering a better drink from the same well. He is offering a different relationship with thirst entirely.

What He offers instead is not water you go somewhere to collect. It is water that becomes — the Greek is precise here — a spring within you. Not a reservoir that gets depleted and needs refilling. A pēgē — a self-generating source, an active fountain. And the word for how it moves is hallomenou — leaping up, springing upward, always in motion. The living water does not sit still and stagnate inside you. It rises. It moves toward eternity, carrying you with it.

Later in John 7:38-39, Jesus makes clear what the living water is: the Holy Spirit. The Spirit does not simply visit the believer from outside. He takes up residence within, becoming the source that was always missing. The thirst that no human relationship, no achievement, no earthly comfort could permanently satisfy — the Spirit reaches that place and fills it from the inside.

The woman left her water jar at the well that day (v.28). She went back into the city without the thing she had come for — because she had found something she no longer needed the jar to carry. That is what Jesus does with the deep thirst. He does not just fill it. He transforms you from someone who keeps returning to wells into someone who carries the spring.

Whatever well you have been returning to — He is at it, waiting. And He is offering something the well never could.

Morning Prayer

Lord Jesus, I come to You this morning as the woman came to the well — with my bucket, with my need, with the quiet awareness that I have been returning to things that satisfy for a while and then leave me thirsty again. You already know what those things are. And You are not standing over me in judgment. You are sitting at the well, waiting.

I receive what You are offering today. Not a temporary relief that sends me back tomorrow — a spring. A source within me that does not run dry, that does not depend on circumstances being right or people coming through or conditions being met. Living water. The Holy Spirit Himself, rising up from inside me toward eternal life.

Where I have been turning to lesser wells — distraction, validation, comfort that does not last — I turn away from them now and toward You. Fill the places in me that nothing else has been able to reach. Let the thirst that has been driving me toward empty things finally find its permanent answer in You.

Let me leave my water jar today. Let me be so satisfied by what You give that I stop needing to carry what I used to carry. In Jesus’ name — Amen.

Reflection for Today

  • The Samaritan woman kept returning to Jacob’s well — reliable but temporary. What are the “wells” in your life that you keep returning to for satisfaction that never quite lasts? What would it look like to bring that specific thirst to Jesus today rather than to the familiar well?
  • Jesus shifts the image from a well you go to — external, requiring effort — to a spring within you that leaps up on its own. In practical terms, what does it mean to live from an internal source rather than constantly going somewhere external for what you need? Where do you feel that difference most in your daily life?
  • The woman left her water jar at the well and went back to the city — she no longer needed what she had come for. Is there something you have been carrying — a need for approval, a fear, a habit of turning to lesser things — that Jesus is inviting you to leave at the well today? What would it feel like to walk away without it?
