Topic: God’s Standard For Peaceful Co-existence

TEXT: Deuteronomy 21:15-17(NKJV)
15. ” If a man has two wives, one loved and the other unloved, and they have borne him children, [both] the loved and the unloved, and [if] the firstborn son is of her who is unloved,

  1. “then it shall be, on the day he bequeaths his possessions to his sons, [that] he must not bestow firstborn status on the son of the loved wife in preference to the son of the unloved, the [true] firstborn.

  2. “But he shall acknowledge the son of the unloved wife [as] the firstborn by giving him a double portion of all that he has, for he [is] the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn [is] his.

STUDY: Equity is fairness or justice in the way people are treated. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary says it is freedom from bias and favouritism. Today’s passage addresses the right of the first born. In Israel, the firstborn receives a double portion inheritance and takes over his father’s role as head of the family. The one who owns the natural right of firstborn may lose such by human judgment in some circumstances, especially if the co-wife to his mother is loved above his mother. Anywhere this happens, the home loses its peace, harmony and togetherness.

God introduced His wisdom here by bringing in corrective measures on issues that could destroy the peace and love in the family. This is Divine solution to human problems (Deuteronomy 10:17).
God wants us to live in a society devoid of hatred, segregation and tribalism (Hebrew 13:1).We should live in love as brothers where resources are shared without sentiment or bias (Romans 12:9-10), Parents and family members should shun inequality but demonstrate equity and affection for family members.

The government, political, social and religious groups should abort every act of discrimination, marginalisation and selfishness. They should embrace oneness, companionship and brotherliness, even with people outside their groups. Above all, Christ is the wisdom of God. Believe in Christ and His words and live to reflect equity as well as encourage and maintain peaceful communal life.

PRAYER: Equity is the product of a godly heart. Be equitable in Your relationship with all people.
