The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? – Psalm 27:1 (NRSVUE)
My husband and I traveled to one of the Great Lakes to serve as lighthouse keepers at a 150-year-old lighthouse. As we drove onto the peninsula where the lighthouse is located, the woods around us grew deeper and denser. We were relieved when we finally saw the lighthouse and the apartment where we would stay.
It was a unique week of volunteer work and a true adventure for us.
We felt God’s presence in this lovely old place. We marveled at its historical significance as a beacon to many ships and boats for well over a century. It made me think of God’s light guiding us and of God’s presence shining in the eyes of the visitors we met, who came from all over the country and the world. And I couldn’t help but recall the difficult times in our lives when God’s light illumined us and helped us to trust in God’s presence, even when we didn’t know the outcome.
Praying, reading scripture, and worshiping in community guide us as Christians, just as the mariners trusted in the old lighthouse to guide them away from rocks, sandbars, and shallow water. What a beautiful reminder a lighthouse is of God’s guiding light, especially in challenging times.
