TOPIC: Standing Strong in Faith
Today’s Reading
Jeremiah 17:5-8
Blessed are those who trust in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. They shall be like a tree planted by water, sending out its roots by the stream. – Jeremiah 17:7-8 (NRSVUE)
Today’s Message
My wife and I recently retired and moved to a new state after living in the same area for 41 years. We did not know anyone, and it was challenging to set up our new life, build our home, make friends, and find a faith community. Yet our faith called us to trust in the Lord’s plans for us.
Since our move, I have fallen in love with the magnificent old trees of our beautiful maritime forest. These oaks and other hardwoods are bent and sculpted by the ocean winds and many seasons of ferocious storms and scorching sun. Yet they lay out their limbs to provide shelter for countless animals and plants, and they anchor their roots in the sandy soil, protecting the coastal plain. When I have my doubts about what lies ahead, I need only to walk through the forest and marvel at the strength and perseverance of these weathered sentinels.
My wife and I are determined to spread our roots here and to bear fruit in our new community. We trust that even when we face storms of disappointment and winds of change, we will always be rooted in God’s loving care.
Today’s Prayer
Faithful God, thank you for reminders of your presence in creation. Help us always to put our trust in you, the Author and Sustainer of all creation. Amen.
Thought for the Day
I will spread my roots, trusting God’s plan for me.
