TOPIC: Listen
TODAY’S READING
Mark 9:2-13
KEY VERSE: A cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!” – Mark 9:7 (NIV)
MESSAGE: Our flight attendant was getting frustrated. She was explaining the emergency safety procedures, but many of us were either ignoring her or engaged in other conversations. Eventually she raised her voice and authoritatively declared, “Listen up! This could save your life!” Her command surprised and embarrassed me. But it got my attention, and I began listening as though my life depended on it.
Peter, James, and John had surely made assumptions about who Jesus was and what he meant to them — assumptions that limited their ability to listen to him afresh. But Jesus shook them free of these assumptions with the Transfiguration.
My own assumptions around scripture often keep me from hearing what might be life-changing truth. I assume I already know the message when I encounter familiar scriptures, and my mind tends to wander when I hear unfamiliar words. Every Sunday, the minister invites us to “listen for the word of God,” but I confess that I do not always listen afresh. However, I can heed the words of the flight attendant who once exposed my cavalier attitude and learn to listen to God’s word as though my life depends on it. Surely it does.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Lord, open our ears that we may hear your words of truth for our lives. Amen.
