The Upper Room 20 December 2021 Daily Devotional Message
I always had problems with my appearance. I compared myself to other girls and had thoughts like, Wow, if I had her hair, or her eyes, or her body. . . . This led to depression and suicidal thoughts. In the summer of 2018 I decided I didn’t want to continue with this sadness anymore, and I grabbed some pills. I stood at the end of my bed completely heartbroken. That night a war was going on in my head. Thoughts swirled in my mind: Do it. You are worthless. No one is going to miss you. But I also heard, Your family loves you. It isn’t your time; I brought you into this world for a purpose. Hang in there; it will get better. I knew God was with me as I struggled with these thoughts.
Psalm 139 reminds me that I am uniquely made by a God who gazes upon me with loving eyes. Song of Songs 4:7 says, “You are altogether beautiful, my darling; there is no flaw in you.” Each of us is beautiful and loved, and we are perfect in God’s eyes. When we stop comparing ourselves to others, we can value ourselves for who we are. We are the children of God, and God loves us all unconditionally. We are fearfully and wonderfully made.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear God, teach us to value and love ourselves. Help us not to compare ourselves to others and instead to walk with confidence as the unique people you made us. Amen.
