The Upper Room 17 April 2022 Daily Devotional MESSAGE

I began attending seminary after I retired, taking one fall-semester class. I have done that annually for the last eight years. My purpose is not to attain a degree; it’s simply to help me grow in my walk with the Lord.

As friends heard about my seminary experience, they often asked, “What have you learned?” After much reflection, I named some aspects of my faith that have grown in importance to me. The first is reading and properly interpreting the Bible. The second is humility, learning from the powerful example of Jesus. Being in community, living and serving together as the body of Christ is another.

And finally, the significance of the Cross has become clearer to me. For Christians, what Christ did at Calvary assures us of eternal life. We don’t earn it; it’s a gift by the grace of God. But the Cross is about more than our personal salvation. It’s the point in history where God intervened to renew the covenant with creation, the day that sin and death were conquered.

I’ve read about the cross of Christ and what it means; I believe it, and I confess it. But the more I reflect on that sacrifice, the more sure I am that I will never fully comprehend this act of incredible love and amazing grace.

TODAY’S PRAYER (The Upper Room 17 April 2022)
