Scripture Union Daily Guide 9 August 2022 Devotional Message for Monday– Open the door!

Scripture Union Daily Guide 9 August 2022 Devotional for Tuesday

TOPIC: Open the door!

OPENING PRAYER: Dear Lord, grant me understanding and illumination as I ponder on your word in Jesus name.

SCRIPTURE: Revelation 3:14‐22

Scripture Union Daily Guide 9 August 2022 MESSAGE

The Lord has no approval for the church in Laodicea. Instead, He is about to spew them out of His mouth for being neither hot nor cold. Would you rather be “hot” to please the Lord or be “lukewarm” against His will? Joshua threw a similar loyalty challenge to the Israelites (Joshua 24:14‐15).

Note that the Lord has not cast them out; instead, He warns them to amend their ways. Jesus will never drive away anyone who comes to Him (John 6:37), but those who backslide continuously drive themselves away. The Laodicea church’s attitude towards their wealth dilutes their commitment (v.17).

While they think of wealth and self‐sufficiency, the Lord points out their true condition: wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked (v.17). Money is useful in accomplishing ministry and missions, but care must be taken that wealth does not become the focus of the church, for no one can serve two masters (See Luke 16:13. See also Psalm 20:7).

Jesus standing at the door and knocking (v.20) indicates that they had pushed Him out of the church! No Christ, no true church! Jesus is still knocking at the door of every heart. When we open for Him to enter, He also opens the gate of heaven for us to enter His Kingdom.

Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
• Is there any prayer for me to remember?
• What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
• Lord, I open the door into every area of my life. Come in and help me live for you all the days of my life.
