The mission of the twelve (v.1) is a practical response to the need for workers expressed by Jesus. See Matthew 9:37-38. Notice from the list in vs.2-4 that the twelve Apostles were chosen from different vocations and backgrounds; the fishermen, the tax collector, the politician (the Zealot).
What lesson do you learn from this as you desire to make yourself available for the harvest? Jesus has commissioned every believer to share the gospel message with others. Do not fail Him. Notice the key things Jesus sent His disciples to do and not do in vs.5-8. We will recall that,
1. They had first been with and learnt from Him. We too must spend time with our Master in order to be effective witnesses.
2. He first empowered them (v.1).
Our Lord only asks us to do that which He has already empowered us to do. We only need to step out in faith! The power that Jesus gave also had the ability to cater for their other needs hence His clear instructions (vs.9-10a). How then were the disciples to be sustained?
See vs.10b-13. Those to whom they minister have the responsibility to show them hospitality. We must however avoid compelling people to give. This has made the word of God of none effect. We are to give generously and willingly as led by God, not out of compulsion or undue persuasion.

• Ask God to show you how to play your part in spreading the gospel. • Thank God for the press houses and publishing houses that primarily devote to publishing Christian literature and related materials.
