Jesus’ introduction of Himself in Revelation 2:8 may be a reminder to the church that was severely persecuted that there is victory over death for believers. They were greatly troubled both by the pagans and the hostile Jews (Revelation 2:9). However, the worst the enemy can do to us is to kill the body. But no one, however powerful, can touch our spirit and with Christ’s victory over death, we are indeed, more than conquerors (Romans 8:35-39).
Nothing bad was said about this church. Note the limitation of material poverty (Revelation 2:9). Those in Christ are rich. Read 2 Corinthians 6:10; James 2:5. Two main exhortations were given to the Christians. First, do not be afraid of suffering (Revelation 2:10). The devil is the source of suffering, but suffering will not be forever. It was a test of their faith. See also 1 Peter 1:6-7. How do all these speak to us?
Secondly, be faithful (Revelation 2:10b). Note the extent of this demand. We should not allow problems to draw us away from God; rather they should draw us closer to Him. Observe that there is a prize to be won at the end. It is also stated as a promise to overcomers (Revelation 2:11).

Keep looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.
