Scripture Union Daily Guide 4 April 2026 – Outline
Jesus hung on the cross with the sin of the entire world on His shoulders. Little wonder that darkness covered the earth right in the middle of the day. Jesus faced rejection from the Father (Matthew 27:46). What does it feel like to be rejected by the most important person in your life. Notice the unfolding of events – the darkness (Luke 23:45), the temple curtain torn into two, opening the way for all to access the presence of God where previously only the high priest had access. Jesus now entrusts Himself to the Father. He has fulfilled His purpose for coming and giving Himself for the world. Notice the testimony of the Roman official who had probably witnessed the entire process and seen many similar executions. He worshipped God. What do you do when you observe God’s intervention or mighty acts?
What a day this would have been when it seems as if evil has triumphed. Jesus gives His life for humanity. Meanwhile, Joseph, one of the secret disciples fulfilled his assignment in the story by providing a resting place for Jesus’ body. We have secret believers in the underground churches today. How can the rest of us practically support these suffering brethren?
INSIGHT

HYMN: THE OLD RUGGED CROSS
1. On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
The emblem of suffering and shame;
And I love that old cross where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners was slain.
Refrain: So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it some day for a crown.
2. O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
Has a wondrous attraction for me;
For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above
To bear it to dark Calvary.
3. In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,
A wondrous beauty I see,
For ’twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,
To pardon and sanctify me.
4. To the old rugged cross I will ever be true;
Its shame and reproach gladly bear;
Then He’ll call me some day to my home far away,
Where His glory forever I’ll share.
