Daily Guide 18th November 2024 (Scripture Union) Outline
Does God really answer prayer or is prayer something we do as a routine or to satisfy our conscience? The Bible says He does (Psalm 65:2; John 16:23-24; 1 John 5:14-15). Read vs.20-23 and note particularly when and how Daniel’s prayer was answered. Does that encourage you to pray? And what if the answer is not swift as it sometimes happens? God has the prerogative to answer at His own time. His delay is not denial.
The answer may also come in a way we never expect. How do we see this in the case of Daniel (vs.24-27)? Daniel was only concerned with the immediate deliverance of his people and Jerusalem, but God offered him something better – the final deliverance of his people from sin through the Messiah (v.24). Seventy-seven here means 490 years. The time between the decree authorizing the rebuilding of Jerusalem (v.25) and the coming of the Messiah (Christ) was to be 483 years.
From the time king Cyrus of Persia allowed the Jews to go and rebuild the temple in Jerusalem to the time of Christ’s death on the cross took those 483 years. These data do not always give themselves to straightforward interpretation. Many believed that the remaining one week (seven years) of Daniel’s dream will be fulfilled during the tribulation period.
