Scripture Union Daily Guide 3rd February 2021 Message:
Fasting was considered as a display to show off the level of spirituality of the Pharisees and John’s disciples. They therefore missed the significance of fasting. The same happens today where spirituality has been reduced to how long and how many days one can sustain a fast at the expense of its benefits.
Fasting should not just become a period of refraining from eating and drinking but a time to draw closer to God and have profitable fellowship with God through Bible meditation and prayer. It should also be a time to pray for others and to assist them in overcoming their predicaments (Isaiah 58: 6 – 7).
We have various expressions of faith in this passage. Some expressed theirs aloud (vs.18,27), others silently (vs.20-21). In both ways, a specific action followed (vs.18,21; cf. James 2:26). To Jesus, there is no hopeless situation (vs.23-25). Trust in Him!
God honours every expression of faith. By using the wineskin illustration (vs.16-17), Jesus was showing that there could be no patching of Judaism with Christianity. Some of our traditions cannot be mixed with Christianity. Can you think of any of these?

• Turn to the Lord and trust Him to grant you victory. • Pray for political leaders to know that power belongs to God and, therefore, be willing to work for and uphold free and fair electoral processes and systems.
