Topic “The Great Light
TEXT: Matthew 4:12-17(NKJV)
12. Now when Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, He departed to Galilee.
13. And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali,
14. that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying:
15. “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, [By] the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles:
16. The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, And upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death Light has dawned.”
17. From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
STUDY: Our text indicates that those who sat in darkness had seen a great light. The opposite of darkness is light – Jesus represents light while Satan represents darkness. Jesus is the great light here. As stated in Isaiah 6 l:1-2 (cf. Luke 4:18-19). part of Jesus’ manifesto was that He came “to proclaim liberty to the captives and the opening of the prison to those 11ho are bound.” These are those whom the devil had dragged into his darkness. Jesus came to set such people free. John 10:10 states that the devil came to steal, kill and destroy; Jesus came to give us life in abundance.
Many people prefer darkness to light because their deeds are evil (John 3:19). When one is living a life of sin, one is usually afraid to come to the Light. These are some of the benefits of following the Great Light: One becomes a child of God (John 1:12); one receives eternal life, (John 3:16); peace of mind is assured (John 16:33); prosperity is available (3 John 2); protection is available (Prov. 18:10); good health is assured (1 Peter 2:24), etc. Some of the packages of following the devil include: To steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10a); leads one to eternal destruction (John3:36), etc.
Whichever you prefer will determine your destiny in eternity. Jesus declared, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. “(Matt. 4:17). Decide now.
PRAYER: Oh Lord, may you open the eyes of men to choose the Great
Light.
