Scripture Union Daily Guide 31st March 2021, Wednesday MessageĀ

TOPIC: The Dilemma of Pilate: Jesus or Barabbas

Opening Prayer: Dear Lord, I pray that you sanctify my spirit, soul and body as I read your word in Jesus name.

Scripture: Matthew 27: 11-26

Question(s) for Reflection
ā€¢ Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow? ā€¢ Is there any warning for me to heed?

Pilate clearly was convinced that Jesus was not guilty of the charges brought against him, but he was afraid to say so for fear of offending the Jewish leaders. Notice the two attempts he made to exonerate himself from responsibility for the injustice perpetrated against Jesus (vs.15-18; 24). Notice the sincerity and advice of Pilate’s wife in v. 19.

The first attempt failed because the Jewish leaders were determined to secure the death of Jesus by any means possible. They worked up the crowd who a few days earlier had shouted “hosanna” to now vehemently cry out, “crucify him”. How short-lived and shallow the praises of men can be. Likewise, how dangerous wicked leaders can be. As for the second attempt, the sin of the heart cannot be washed away by ordinary detergent.

It requires God’s intervention through the blood of Jesus. Millions of citizens of our nations, especially in Africa, are suffering because of injustices and corruption in government and the legal systems.

Christians in legal practice and government are called by God to be different, to show courage in the discharge of their duties and ensure justice for the common people. See Proverbs 31:8-9; 24:23-25. What is the implication of the people’s answer in v. 25 and what warning is there for us today?

ā€¢ Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
ā€¢ Take time to pray for our leaders and legal practitioners, that they will do their job with the fear of God. ā€¢ Pray for the political leaders of your country to imbibe the virtues of truth, honesty and compassion for their citizens.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with
ā€¢ Prov. 22-24; Heb. 2
