Scripture Union Daily Guide 30 January 2022 MESSAGE

A centurion was a Roman army officer in charge of 100 men, a key person in the hated colonial army which was oppressing the Jews. Yet, note the testimony of the Jewish leaders who went to plead this centurion’s case before Jesus (vs.4‐5). His concern for his servant also testifies to his kindness. Added to that is his incredible faith which Jesus found necessary to commend (v.9).

How this Gentile (non‐Jew) challenges us to live as light in this dark world (Matthew 5:16). His faith paid off. Jesus also raised up the widow’s son who was not merely sick but dead (vs.14‐15). Unlike the case of Jairus, faith was not mentioned at all. Why then did Jesus raise this young man? As is often mentioned in many of his healing miracles, it is because of His compassion in the face of human suffering, (Mark 6:34).

He is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and so we should have confidence in Him when we pray. We should not be afraid if we have only a little faith. We can put our confidence in His grace and compassion.
