Scripture Union Daily Guide 3 January 2022 | Outline
‘John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance’ (Acts 19:4). We know that Jesus was sinless and hence does not need to repent and be baptised. He however received John’s baptism ‘to fulfil all righteousness’ (see Matthew 3:13‐15). He came to take our place and die for our sins so we will not perish but have eternal life. Jesus Christ is truly God and truly Man. Luke testified to these truths by introducing Him to us at two levels. Truly God, by highlighting the presence and testimony of the two other persons of the Triune God ‐ the descent of the Holy Spirit upon Him and the Father’s voice, identifying Him as His son.
And truly man by tracing His genealogy from His earthly father, Joseph to Adam. We have another but significantly different genealogy of Jesus in Matthew 1:1‐16. A major difference between the two relates to the focus of the Gospel writers. The account of Luke, a Gentile, goes back to Adam to emphasize that Jesus came for the whole world while Matthew, a Jew, stops at Abraham to emphasize the Messiahship of Jesus and His historical ties with the Jews.
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
