TOPIC: Test The Spirits To Know Whether They Are From God

Open prayer: Dear Lord, grant me understanding and illumination as I ponder on your word in Jesus name.

Scripture: 1 Kings 13:11–34

Reflection
• What is God revealing to me in this passage?

Message: The younger man of God resisted the temptation from Jeroboam but failed to recognize one when it was conveyed in a religious manner by the older prophet. As a result, he set aside the word from God and started following other instructions (vv.18–19). In this unusual story, a prophet told a lie and another prophet believed it and suffered for it. A major lesson for us is total obedience of all instructions we receive from God in our lives. We also need discernment to know whether a message is from God or from other sources (1 John 4:1). We cannot afford to respect man, any man, more than God.

Paul is categorical that we should not deviate from the gospel of truth irrespective of the medium through which any contrary gospel is proclaimed (Galatians 1:8–9). There are many in our days who come in the Lord’s name but eventually lead their followers astray. Watch out for any hot revelations that seem to have come from the Lord directly. Test all the words, actions and motives against Scripture because the Bible alone is our highest authority in matters of life and faith.

⁂ Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Practice/Word Application
• And so: We must stay in constant touch with God through prayer and the study of the Bible. Those who receive and assimilate the truth of the Word of God will have their capacity for understanding enlargement and their knowledge increased and will be able to distinguish between the operation of the Holy Spirit and that of the evil spirit.

Hymn: He Leadeth Me

1. He leadeth me, for I can feel the clasping
Of that pierc?d hand so firm, so kind, so dear;
And in sweet, trusting confidence I follow,
And fear no danger while my guide is near.

Refrain
He leadeth me, He leadeth me,
No danger then my soul shall fear,
But in sweet, trusting confidence I follow,
And fear no danger while my guide is near.

2. He leadeth me, but not thro’ flowery meadows,
Where sunshine lingers all the gladsome day;
My tir?d feet are often torn and bleeding,
With thorns that pierce them in this narrow way.

Prayer Points
• Pray for the genuine believers to know when they are being enticed to follow ways that are not based on the Scripture.
• Pray against the spiritual strongholds militating against peace and unity in Nigeria.
• Offer a prayer of faith in line with Psalm 40:17
