Scripture Union Daily Guide 27 April 2021, Tuesday Message
TOPIC: Man’s Tradition or God’s Law?
Opening Prayer: Dear Lord, I pray that you sanctify my spirit, soul and body as I read your word in Jesus name.
Scripture: Matthew 15:1-20
Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow? • What is God revealing to me in this passage?
The Pharisees would not see what was evil in their daily practices but rather look out for the faults in others, and here, in the disciples of Christ. This is what religion still does today. Many would not check their lives against the demands of the Word of God, but rather complain about the wrong things they see in the church and in other believers. Jesus in response accused the Pharisees of holding to their tradition while breaking God’s law, a more serious sin (vs.3-6; cf. 1 Timothy 5:8). Read vs.8-9 again.
In what ways would you think your teaching, behaviour and current lifestyle may contradict God’s word? In vs.11, 17-20, Jesus stated what would really make a person unclean. How do you measure against this standard of practical holiness? Notice what Jesus said about the Pharisees in v.14. How should this help us in our choice of a counsellor, a pastor or a teacher?
Practice/Word Application
• And so? As leaders or members of the body of Christ, are there some ways that we may have so overstressed our Church doctrines or dogmas that the gospel has become ineffective?
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Closing Prayer
• Ask the Lord to help you keep away from those things that truly defile you. Matthew 15:21-28 • Pray for revival of Christians to personal witnessing and that the witness of the Church worldwide will never be muffled; pray for Church budgets to reflect Kingdom priorities.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with
• Num. 1-2; Rev.
