Topic: Warning to False Prophets

Opening Prayer: May the meditation of my heart be acceptable unto you, O Lord as I read from your word.

Scripture: Ezekiel 13:1-23

Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any warning for me to heed?

God commanded Ezekiel to “prophesy against the prophets” (13:2a). Instead of being colleagues in ministry, what were these prophets doing (vs.2b-3)? Sadly, Bible ministers sometimes become distant from God. Think of possible causes (too familiar with God’s Word? Materialism? Pride? Prayerlessness? Backsliding?). See how God describes false prophets (vs.4,6-7).

Jackals live on dead animals and move about in groups. False prophets sometimes gang up too. What had God expected of them (v.5)? Instead, how did they deceive God’s people (vs.7,10, 16)? Some of these false prophets were women.

Note their strategies (vs.18,20,21) and the result (vs.19-21, 23). They combined satanic powers with discouragement (v.22). Painters usually use white paint to cover or ‘whitewash’ uncompleted, messy buildings. Though instantly beautiful, it gradually fades, revealing its true nature.

People can behave similarly: present godly appearance while living in sin, even believing their own lies (v.6). Unfortunately, many religious leaders lack the courage to rebuke sin. They seek cheap popularity, promising peace and prosperity without challenging wickedness. God punishes the false prophets (vs.3,8-9, 20-21a), and the land (vs.11-15).

There is no excuse. Our duty is to search God’s Word diligently, and to know the truth that sets us free. God provides both warning and hope (Proverbs 28:13; I John 1:7-10. For further study: Read Jeremiah 23:16-32; Matthew 7:15-20 about how to tell between true prophets of God and false prophets.

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
• Pray against the work of deceivers and impostors in the body of Christ.

• Thank God for the death of Jesus Christ on the cross, and His resurrection for the remission of the sins of mankind: the only assurance of eternity with God.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with Psalm 115:15; Psalms 37-39; Acts 17:16-34
