Scripture Union Daily Guide 25 August 2021 – His Divine Power

Scripture Union Daily Guide 25th August 2021
Scripture Union Daily Guide 25 August 2021 Wednesday Message

Topic: His Divine Power

Opening Prayer: Make my life oh Lord a reflection of you as I study your word.

Scripture: 2 Peter 1:1 – 11

Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any command for me to obey?

• What is God revealing to me in this passage?

INTRODUCTION TO 2 PETER
It is generally agreed that this letter and 1 Peter were written by Peter just before he was martyred during the reign of Nero about AD 67/68. In the second letter, Peter seeks to encourage Christian growth (chapter 1) and alerts his readers to the challenge posed by false teachers (chapter 2). Like Jude, he did not spare these evil ‘preachers/prophets’ but denounced them and their evil ministry in very strong terms. In chapter 3, he challenges his readers not to be ignorant of the second coming of our Lord, Jesus Christ but to prepare for it by growing ‘in the grace and knowledge of our Lord’.

Have you, through our Saviour Jesus Christ, received a faith as precious as that of the apostles (v.1)? If so, then the benefits of new life are yours! Find two of these in v.2. The power to live a righteous life is divine, coming from God alone (v.3), not by our own might or willpower (Zechariah 4:6). When we have new birth through receiving Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, God enables us to participate in his divine nature (see 2 Corinthians 5:21).

How is “the corruption of the world caused by evil desires” (v.4)? See James 4:1-3. Twice in this passage, Peter urges believers to “make every effort” (vs.5,10). This is a call to serious commitment to Christian living. Our loyalty is to add one virtue to another (vs.5-7).

What will be the result of possessing these qualities (v.8)? Practical faith produces results as a demonstration that we “have been cleansed” from our past sins (v.9). While these works do not guarantee our salvation, they nevertheless confirm it. They keep us from stumbling and uphold the promise of eternal life (vs.10,11).

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
• Thank you, Lord, that your divine power has given us everything we need for godly living. Help us to add to our faith all the virtues of the Christian life.

• Pray that the political leaders will act and conduct themselves in a manner that promotes peace and unity of their country.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with Habakkuk 3:19;Psalms 119:1-88; 2 Cor. 4
