Scripture Union Daily Guide 23 August 2021 Outline:
The Lord instructs the prophet to set his face towards Jerusalem and prophesy against Israel. God hates the sins they have committed (v.3), and He is determined to punish them. Sin surely has wages! The destroying agent is identified as the drawn sword of God’s judgment which will cut off both the righteous and sinner (v.3).
Sometimes, the righteous suffer not because of judgment for their sin, but because they live in a fallen world. There is a call to groan with broken heart and bitter grief; and to cry out and wail (vs.6,12), because of the news of God’s judgment against sin and His people. True prophets and true followers of Jesus never rejoice when they must announce to people the consequences of their sin. Neither can they remain unconcerned in the face of the coming wrath of God.
This raises questions about the practice in some churches today, where people are encouraged to pray for the destruction and death of their human enemies. What else was the prophet to do to show the method by which God will bring about His judgment (vs.12,14)?
These dramatic actions were to cause the people to change their ways because God was determined to punish their sin (v.17).
