Scripture Union Daily Guide 23 September 2021 Thursday Message
Topic: From The Lord Comes Deliverance!
Opening Prayer: Oh Lord, fill me with the power of the Holy Ghost as I study your word.
Scripture: Psalm 3:1-8
Question(s) for Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
Though David had been chosen by God to replace King Saul, he had to wait for several years until the death of King Saul. Not long after he became king, his own son, Absalom, gathered an army of traitors and rebelled against him (see 2 Samuel 15-17).
This Psalm is David’s testimony of God’s deliverance from the evil plot and actions of Absalom. In vs.1-2, David expresses the reality of his experience and the conclusion of others. But what, according to vs.3-4 is David’s own personal conviction? We must learn to be confident of our security in God, especially when we face difficult times.
In vs.5-6, we see the results of such unwavering faith and confidence, which can also be your experience. Read vs.7-8 again and resolve always to allow God not only to protect you but also to fight your battles so that others will be genuinely drawn to Him.
For further Reading: Make time to read 2 Samuel 14-17 for a full understanding of the background to this Psalm.
Practice/Word Application
• What Next? What is causing you sleepless nights? What makes you ‘hang your head’? Financial problems, turmoil in the family, failing health? ‘From the Lord comes deliverance.’
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Closing Prayer
• Lift up your head! •
Offer a prayer of faith in line with Isaiah 40:10-11; Ezek. 8-10; John 10:1-23
