• What is God revealing to me in this passage?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 21 June 2020 Message

“It is wonderful to know that Jesus died for me” is an old chorus. Jesus died and paid the price for our sinfulness. But there is a difference in what John says here in v.1 and in 1:8. The Christian who is in the light must not indulge in sinful practices (v.1). He is to aim at perfection (see Matthew 5:48). However, one cannot walk around without his head moving (Yoruba adage). On this side of eternity, we will occasionally stumble. When we do sin, we must not remain in that state.

We should get up realizing that Christ is still defending our cause with the Father (vv.1–2). Someone once said the victorious Christian living is not running without falling but falling and rising to continue.(cf.Ps.37:23–24) Identify two tests in vv.3&6 by which we can know that we are in Christ. The first is occasional, to some extent, but not less demanding. The other test is a continuing one, walking as Jesus walked, talking, and doing things the Jesus way! See 1 Corinthians 10:31. That is why mere indifference, not even hatred, to the plight of another person is an indication that we may still be far away from where we think we are spiritually vv9–11. Love, especially among the brethren, is not optional, but obligatory. See John 13:34,35.

Practice/Word Application
• And so? If you have deliberately withdrawn your love for someone, restore it today.

Barrenness
Barrenness is a state where one is unable to have babies or not productive. In many African cultures women generally find their identity through child–bearing. The barren women feel ashamed, obsessed and disturbed because they have no children. A Christian becomes barren spiritually when he or she does not make converts or is not spiritually fruitful. In the Scripture, God expresses his displeasure for spiritual barrenness. He expects all His children to be fruitful.

Prayer Points
• Read vv.4–6 again and pray that your lifestyle will always reflect the truth of what Jesus has accomplished in your life.
• Pray for interdenominational Christian fellowships operating in our campuses – IVF, SUCF, NIFES, FCS and such others – to blossom and be instruments of unity in the body of Christ.
• Offer a prayer of faith in line with Genesis 32:26b
