TOPIC: Jesus – The Resurrection And The Life

OPENING PRAYER: May the meditation of my heart be acceptable unto you, O Lord as I read from your word.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE: JOHN 11:17-27

17 Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.

18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:

19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.

20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.

21 Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

22 But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.

23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.

24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION
• Q7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?
• Q8: Is there any other Biblical passage that can help me understand this passage better?

SU DAILY GUIDE 21ST FEBRUARY 2024 OUTLINE:

The death of anyone signals a total end. There is no more hope on this side of eternity. So, Martha was just being human. What she expected from the Lord at this point was comfort and healing. Notice her greetings (v.21). It signalled pain and regrets. Even the promises of Jesus (v.23) only made sense to her in eternity, not in her current situation. She did not seem to have grasped the fact that the resurrection and the life was right there with her. He can therefore raise the dead and give life to dead Lazarus.

How do you understand v.26? We see here the distinction between earthly life and eternal life, between earthly death and eternal death in hell.

Mary’s great confession is worthy of note (v.27). Her confession here and her earlier statement (v.22) show that she was a woman of great faith. God would want us to respond in similar way to our challenges; for only such response can receive great miracle from the Lord.
