TOPIC: The Testimony of Holy Spirit

OPENING PRAYER: Let me know more of you today dear Lord as I meditate on your word.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE: JOHN 10:22-30 (NIV)

22 Then came the Festival of Dedication[a] at Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was in the temple courts walking in Solomon’s Colonnade. 24 The Jews who were there gathered around him, saying, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”

25 Jesus answered, “I did tell you, but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me, 26 but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all[b]; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”

QUESTION FOR REFLECTION
• Q5: Is there any warning for me to heed?

SU DAILY GUIDE 18TH FEBRUARY 2024 OUTLINE:

The Festival of the Dedication was born from the rededication of the temple after it was defiled by Greco-Syrian soldiers about 164 B.C. Maccabeus led a revolt against the colonizers and retook Jerusalem and the temple, hence the rededication. Today, this festival is known as the Festival of Lights or Hanukkah. It was during this festival that the Jews sought to get clarity from Jesus whether He was the long-awaited Messiah.

He told them that the answer was before them, but they refused to believe. What signs demonstrated before all the Jews of the time pointed to Jesus as the Messiah? They heard Him teach. They saw Him heal people, drive away demons, heal the lame and the blind etc, but their minds remained closed.
Note in vs.27-30, the qualities that mark out the Lord’s ‘sheep’ and the benefits they enjoy.

Practice/Word Application
So what? The problem with the Jews was unbelief. They saw the miracles, but they did not understand the significance (see John 20:30-31). Examine yourself and find out whether there is unbelief in your heart which could be blocking your blessings and ask the Lord to help you overcome it.

HYMN: My heart, how dreadful hard it is!

1. My heart, how dreadful hard it is!
How heavy here it lies!
Heavy and cold within my breast,
Just like a rock of ice!

2. Sin like a raging tyrant sits
Upon this flinty throne,
And every grace lies buried deep
Beneath this heart of stone.

3. How seldom do I rise to God,
Or taste the joys above!
This mountain presses down my faith
, And chills my flaming love.

4. When smiling mercy courts my soul
With all its heavenly charms,
This stubborn, this relentless thing
Would thrust it from my arms.

5. Against the thunders of thy word
Rebellious I have stood,
My heart it shakes not at the wrath
And terrors of a God.

6. Dear Saviour, steep this rock of mine
In thine own crimson sea;
None but a bath of blood divine
Can melt the flint away.

Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, I want to hear your voice and to follow you all the days of my life. Please help me.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with 2 Samuel 22:17
“He sent from above, he took me; he drew me out of many waters;”
