Question(s) for Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
The Jewish exiles in Babylon were blaming their ancestors for the terrible punishment that had come upon them. Before God, all people are equal, and He judges them individually. All flesh belongs to him and He will hold people accountable for their own sins – the reward of sin is death (v.4b).
Some people from Judah had taken solace in a corporate umbrella of God’s blessing as an excuse for disobeying God. These people thought because their ancestors were righteous, they would not die but live. The righteous God emphatically told them that they would not. However, anyone who returns to God would live (vs.14-18).
God is no respecter of persons, whatever a man sows, he will reap it (see Galatians 6:7). In the same way, God, the Father, is waiting today for someone to return to Him, no matter how sinful he/she may be. The blood of Jesus is available to cleanse any willing soul of all sins and guilt.
