The Jewish elders had resolved to execute Jesus but had no authority to do so under the Roman law, thus the need to bring Jesus before Governor Pilate to obtain the required permission. Under Roman law, there should be convincing evidence against the accused before a death sentence could be passed. Notice the accusations brought against Jesus in v.2?

Compare these with Luke 20:22‐26 and Matthew 26:60‐66. Despite the vehement accusations, Pilate knew that the allegations were “cooked up” out of envy (see Mark 15:10), hence his declaration in v.4. Have you ever been accused falsely? What was your reaction? The common saying, “justice delayed is justice denied,” was the case when Pilate decided to send Jesus to Herod for further trial, contrary to his declaration in v.4.

This is a common practice in our judicial system where some suspects are remanded in prison custody for years without trial and some eventually die in prison without conviction. Christians, especially those serving as lawyers and judges, should strive to uphold timely justice. Herod was woefully disappointed (vs.8‐9). Notice what he did as a result (vs.11)? What a challenge!

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
• Remember those in prison unjustly, awaiting trials for crimes they may not have committed.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with Ephesians 3:16
