Scripture: 2 Samuel 13: 1–22
Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
Lust is a strong sexual desire often confused with love. It is deadly and negatively powerful. Everyone should beware of it especially young people. In today’s passage, lustful feelings nurtured to maturity sparked off a series of unfortunate events in David’s family. As we saw earlier (chapter 11), David was the first to welcome and nurture lust in the family.
Observe how Amnon fostered lust, allowed evil company to influence him and went down the road to destruction. Take time to identify all the opportunities he had to escape from this disastrous path. Children of God should beware of temptations and crafty friends and refuse to feed sexual perversions such as incest. Lust always begets evil. It must be resisted and avoided at all cost. Read vv.6b–7.
Did Amnon’s request make logical sense? Parents who are too busy to look into their children’s affairs in detail could miss the opportunity to help them avoid negative effects of peer pressure. Was Tamar foolish in following Ammon to the bedroom to serve him food? We should watch over our young girls lest they make foolish decisions even if innocently! What do you learn from v.15, and the consequences in vv.19–22?
