Today’s passage is a continuation of Paul’s instruction to Timothy about his duties in preserving and propagating the gospel. Read 2 Timothy 2:14-18 again. What was Timothy to do (2 Timothy 2:14-15), what was he to avoid and why (2 Timothy 2:16-18)? Like Timothy, the only way to safeguard the gospel from false teachings, which Paul had warned about in 1 Timothy 1:3 ff and 1 Timothy 4:1 ff, and now again in 2 Timothy 2:17-18 is to do all in our capacity to know the true gospel (2 Timothy 2:15) and continue to teach it to the people (2 Timothy 2:14).
In 2 Timothy 2:19-22, Paul shows that not everyone in God’s Kingdom can be used for God’s glory. Read 2 Timothy 2:19,21-22 again and take note of what we must do and what we must avoid making ourselves readily usable by God. What are some impurities you know which render us unusable by God in this generation? See Mark 7:20-23 (more than a dozen). Read 2 Timothy 2:23-26 again and take note of other demands on us as servants of God, entrusted with the gospel. We must avoid all forms of striving. When we quarrel with people, we close their hearts to the gospel.
