Our Daily Bread for Teens 3rd November 2023 Devotional for Day 307 Message By Our Daily Bread Ministries
TOPIC: The Right Way to Pray
BIBLE READING: Matthew 6:5-15
5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
9 “This, then, is how you should pray:
“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,[a]
but deliver us from the evil one.[b]’
14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
KEY VERSE: When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen – Matthew 6:6
They look up to people who write their prayers in their diaries. They are people who often carry their diaries around with them, keeping track of every prayer and praise- and updating them as God answers or challenges them.
And | look up to the people | know who wear out their carpets because of the amount of time they spend kneeling in prayer. For years, I tried to copy their styles, to re-create their ‘perfect’ prayer lives. I really wanted to learn the right way After a while God showed me that He simply wants prayer that begins and ends with humility (Matt. 6:5).
He invites us into an open and honest conversation through which He promises to listen (v.6). He never asks for fancy or memorised words or phrases (v.7). He tells us that prayer is a gift, an opportunity to focus on God and rest in all He is (vv.9-10), to deepen our confidence in Him (v.11) and to find our security in His forgiveness and leading (vw.12-13).
God promises us He hears and cares about every single spoken and unspoken prayer, as well as the prayers that simply come out as silent tears. As we trust in God and His perfect love, relying on His ways and His care, we can be sure that we’re praying the right way.
REFLECT: TURNING TO JESUS AS OUR LOVING SAVIOUR AND LORD IS THE RIGHT WAY TO PRAY.
