TOPIC: Agreeing to Disagree
BIBLE READING: Romans 14:1-13
KEY VERSE: Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace – ROMANS 14:19
I remember hearing my dad talk about how difficult he found it to walk away from arguments in church about which version of the Bible was best. He also remembered how good it was when both sides agreed to disagree.
But is it really possible to put aside our differences when we’re arguing with other Christians about important things? That’s one of the questions Paul answers in his New Testament letter to the Christians living in Rome. Writing to readers caught up in many conflicts, he suggests ways of finding common ground even during the most heated arguments (romans 14:5-6).
Paul said the way to agree to disagree is to remember that each of us will answer to God not only for our opinions, but also for how we treat one another in our conversations (v. 10).
Arguments can be key times to remember that there are things more important than our own opinions. All of us will answer for whether we have loved one another, and even our enemies, as Jesus loved us.
Now that I think of it, I remember that my dad used to talk about how good it was not just to agree to disagree, but to do so with love, kindness and respect.
REFLECT: IS IT TIME TO AGREE TO DISAGREE-IN LOVE?
