TOPIC: Give Thanks Well
For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. . . . For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest? For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified. — 1 CORINTHIANS 14:2,14-17
God has given to the Church a divine, supernatural means of communication with Himself! God is a Spirit. When we speak in tongues, our spirit is in direct contact with God, who is a Spirit! We are talking to Him by a divine, supernatural means. By this means we can “. . . bless with the spirit . . . .” And we can “. . . givest thanks well . . . .”
When Paul referred to “he that occupieth the room of the unlearned,” he meant those persons who are unlearned in spiritual things. If you
invited me to dinner and said, “Please give thanks,” and I prayed in tongues, you wouldn’t know what I said. You wouldn’t be edified. Therefore, Paul said it would be better to pray with the understanding in that instance.
But notice that the Word of God declares that praying in tongues is a perfect way to give thanks well!
CONFESSION: I shall bless God with the Spirit. I shall give thanks well.
