Joni And Friends Daily Devotional 8th September 2024, Sunday Message
TOPIC: A Golden Rule
“In everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” – Matthew 7:12
TODAY’S MESSAGE
During a flight from Chicago to Los Angeles a few years ago, a flight attendant came down the aisle, offering coffee. My friend Judy, who was flying with me, had gone to the restroom, so when the attendant reached our row, I asked her to pour coffee for the two of us.

Judy was gone quite a while. So when that same flight attendant came back up the aisle, she noticed that the two cups were still sitting there. She asked, “Would you like me to help you?”
In between sips I commented, “I’ll bet you didn’t think this would be part of your job description when you became a flight attendant.” She said, “It’s my pleasure. If I were you, I’d want someone to do the same for me.”
She’s right. It’s a good rule for relating to others. A golden one, in fact. It’s what Jesus tells us to do in the verse for today. “In everything, do to others what you would have them do to you,” says our Lord. That includes every situation in which you might feel awkward or a little unsure of what to do or say. Just relax and think, What would I want someone to do for me?
When Judy finally returned and saw one full cup of coffee and one empty cup, she gave me a funny look. I smiled and said, “I found a new friend.”
What would you like to have someone do for you today? Buy you a little token to say you’re being thought of? Phone to tell you you’re being prayed for? Why not do those things for someone else? You’ll be surprised at how much more golden your day will turn out.
PRAY: Lord, you have shown us by your example how blessed it is to give. Help me to have the courage, and give me the creativity to know how, to do to others as I would like them to do to me.
