Daily Devotional Message
Jesus is speaking in the upper room, on the night of His arrest, with only hours remaining before everything changes. He is not wasting words. And in the middle of all He needs to say, He stops to tell His disciples something about the foundation of their relationship with Him — something He needs them to understand correctly before the storm hits.
You did not choose me. I chose you.
This sentence reverses the way most people think about their faith. We tend to tell the story from our side — the day we decided, the moment we responded, the prayer we prayed. And all of that is real. But Jesus is pointing to something that happened before any of it: His initiative. His decision. His search that found you before you knew you were being looked for. You did not choose Him out of nowhere. You responded to a choosing that was already underway.
This matters enormously for how you carry yourself as a believer. If your security rests on the consistency of your pursuit of God, you will always be uncertain — because there are days when the pursuit feels strong and days when it does not. But if your security rests on His pursuit of you, something settles. He chose you on a day when you were not looking for Him. He has not changed His mind since.
Then Jesus adds something equally important: He did not just choose you. He appointed you. The Greek word is tithēmi — to place deliberately, to set in position, to ordain. You were not randomly placed where you are. The season you are in, the people around you, the gifts and burdens you carry — none of it is accidental. You have been set in position by the same One who chose you, for a purpose He has already designed.
And the purpose is fruit that lasts. Not temporary results, not impressive moments that fade — fruit that remains, that endures, that is still standing after you are gone. Jesus chose you for impact that outlasts you. The small acts of faithfulness, the seeds planted in conversations, the prayers prayed over people who did not know — these are the things that carry eternal weight. Not the things that look significant in the moment but the things that last.
Finally, He ties the promise of answered prayer directly to this appointed, fruit-bearing life. The person who understands they are chosen and is living toward lasting fruit — that person’s prayers carry a particular kind of authority. Not because they have earned it but because they are aligned with the purpose for which they were appointed.
You were chosen. You were placed here on purpose. And the fruit you bear today is going further than you know.
Morning Prayer
Lord Jesus, I receive what this verse says about me this morning — not as a theological statement to agree with, but as a personal declaration to live from. You chose me. Before I found You, You were already looking. Before I responded, You had already decided. And I am secure in that today.
Thank You that my belonging to You does not depend on how well I have been following You lately. It depends on Your choice — and You do not change Your mind. Let that truth settle something in me today that has been unsettled. Let me stop performing for a place I already have.
And Lord, let me live like someone who has been appointed. Not drifting, not accidentally present in the people and places of my life — but deliberately placed there by You, for fruit that will last. Show me today what that fruit looks like in the ordinary moments. Let nothing I do in Your name be wasted.
Whatever I ask in Your name today — let the Father answer. Not because I deserve it, but because I am walking in the purpose for which I was chosen. In Jesus’ name — Amen.
Reflection for Today
- Jesus says “you did not choose me, but I chose you.” Most of us tell our faith story beginning with our decision. What changes about how you see yourself — your security, your identity, your sense of belonging — when you begin the story with His choice instead of yours?
- He appointed you — placed you deliberately where you are. Looking at your current season, your current relationships, your current place in life — what might God be producing through your deliberate placement there that you have not yet recognised as fruit?
- Jesus says He appointed you to bear fruit that will last. What is one thing you are doing — or could do — today whose impact you will not fully see until eternity? How does knowing it lasts change how seriously you take it?
