Bible Reading:
2 Thessalonians 3:6-18
6 Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.
7 For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you;
8 Neither did we eat any man’s bread for nought; but wrought with labour and travail night and day, that we might not be chargeable to any of you:
9 Not because we have not power, but to make ourselves an ensample unto you to follow us.
10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.
11 For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.
12 Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.
13 But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.
14 And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed.
15 Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.
16 Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all.
17 The salutation of Paul with mine own hand, which is the token in every epistle: so I write.
18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.
Question for Meditation
►Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
Scripture Union Daily Guide 21 May 2026 | OUTLINE
The misinformation and confusion caused by false teachers in Thessalonica caused some believers to think that there was no need to work since Jesus was coming anytime. Paul was very strong in warning such people to a point developing a theme for people to be guided by, ‘No work, no food’ (v.10). Paul was not directing people to do what he does not do.
Notice how he and his fellow ministers live among Christians according to vs.7-10. They did this so they would not be a burden to the new converts, thus setting an example for all believers to follow especially, leaders. Laziness often turns people into busybodies. They talk too much and often become gossips and slanderers which would create divisions in the church. When you are busy, you have no time for unhealthy talk.
Laziness is an invitation to poverty (Proverbs 6:9-11; 20:4). Out of the sweat, we find our food and clothing otherwise we become beggars (Genesis 3:19). When you are lazy you live in sin and its destructive characteristics surround you.
Hatred, envy, covetousness, theft and murder are products of laziness. Employment may be an issue in your country but pray and look out for something you can do with your hands to earn your living and cause the name of God to be praised in your life.
PRAYER: Pray for the young people and the unemployment situation in your country.
