Scripture Union Daily Guide 30 June 2026 | OUTLINE
Look at what was said about Absalom in 2 Samuel 14:25-27. How does this contribute to his rebellion? His good looks and family life may have contributed much to all his wrong approaches to life challenges and opportunities (2 Samuel 13:22-29). But insufficient parental discipline made him do what he wanted (2 Samuel 14:30). Children need timely parental rebuke, discipline and guidance rooted in scriptures (Proverbs 22:6; cf. Deuteronomy 6:6-9).
What cripples’ parental discipline is the failure to be models to the children. That is, we must not live wrong life before them. We should be good role models to them. Note in 2 Samuel 14:28-32 Absalom’s desperation to see the King even when the king had earlier banned him from his presence (2 Samuel 14:24). Why? Absalom has grown up with not accepting no from anybody, even from the king. Was this his fault or that of his parents?
Compare what David did in 2 Samuel 14:33 and what he said in 2 Samuel 14:24. Does this give you a clue to David’s way of handling his children and their misconduct? If our action does not match our word, how then do you expect your children and others to take you serious or live godly lives? On the other, is there a time we should soft pedal on some of our hard and harsh decisions to order to receive back our rebellious children?
Closing Prayer
Lord God, grant grace to parents to be living examples to their children and to discipline their children without compromise.
Prayer of Faith
