Scripture Union Daily Guide 14th April 2020 – Peace be with you
Outline: Why do you think the disciples were afraid of the Jews and were mourning behind locked doors (v.19)? Jesus appears to them with comforting words, “peace be with you”.
Note that Jesus repeats this phrase in two other verses possibly underscoring the fact that the disciples needed peace beyond the customary Hebrew Shalom greetings at the time. What a great relief and joy the disciples had to see their Master appearing to them in the midst of their sorrow (v.20).
Similarly, our world and Africa in particular, with many troubles and woes, as well as individuals, need the peace that Jesus offers. Jesus breathing on the disciples signifies empowerment with authority and delegation as his agents, to bring peace and the Goodnews to the world (vv.21–23; Matthew 28:18–20). This is a great privilege and trust.
Today, we have same privilege and trust to carry the Good News to the people in our communities and nations, so they will have peace and eternal life. What lesson can we learn from vv.24–29? (Cf. Hebrews 10:38; 11:6).
