Today’s Reading
John 15:1-8
The word of God is alive and active. – Hebrews 4:12 (NIV)
A few years ago, my younger son sent me the book Walden by Henry David Thoreau. Gradually, I worked at reading it through. However, it was a huge effort. Then, this past May, I visited my son. We went to Walden Pond and walked through the woods (actually he pushed me in a wheelchair) to experience the area Thoreau wrote about. We visited the replica of his cabin, witnessing its simplicity in the midst of the majestic woods. When we returned home, I picked up Walden again. As I began reading, the book came alive because I had been there.
The Holy Spirit revealed to me in this experience a similarity to when I used to pick up my Bible and make an effort to read it; however, it felt foreign, vague, and difficult to comprehend. Then one day I accepted Jesus as my Savior, asking him to come into my heart. The next time I read my Bible, it came alive to me and has remained the bread of life for me in the decades since. This living experience of scripture is possible when we personally come to know Jesus, who is the Word of God.
Today’s Prayer
Dear God, thank you for the gift of scripture. Help us to grow in our relationship with you as we read your holy words. Amen.
Thought for the Day
