Matthew 7:24-27
The winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall. – Matthew 7:25 (NIV)
I saw a commercial on TV advertising an exercise gadget. It showed models with perfect abdominal muscles and promised that I, too, could get in great shape if I bought this little contraption and used it — just five minutes a day, twice per week. For 15 years, I’ve exercised two hours a day, five days a week, so I know there’s no quick and easy way to get in shape.
This reminded me of how, after becoming a Christian, I thought all I had to do was go to church on Sundays and that would get my life in shape. But after years of doing this, I saw no real results. I still behaved mostly the same. I still had little peace and joy. And when going through hard times, my faith would crumble. Then I decided to commit to studying the Bible, and God opened my eyes.
I realized that simply going to church isn’t enough to build my faith. I need to exercise it daily by praying, reading and studying the Bible, and putting Christ’s teachings into practice in my life. After more than 10 years of practicing my faith, my behavior is more Christlike. I am full of peace and joy, and I can withstand the storms of life.
Today’s Prayer
Dear Father, help us to be doers of your word, not just hearers. Amen.
