James 3:5-13
A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity. – Proverbs 17:17 (NIV)
One day I posted some remarks on social media that I thought were pretty innocuous. When I checked back several hours later, someone had added an angry comment condemning me. However, following that comment, two others defended me and vouched for my character. Both were people I knew from high school — many, many years ago. While we were friends online, we had not met in person for quite some time. And yet, they stood up for me in a kind and supportive way. Their words took the sting out of that negative post.
Our words have power either to build up or tear down. Harsh, condemning words can damage a fragile soul, bring anger and retribution, and cause division. They can destroy Christians’ witness to the world and repel those who might have come to Christ.
On the other hand, words spoken in love can give hope to the hurting, heal emotional wounds, and give strength to the weary. They can draw people to our loving God. As representatives of Christ, let’s consider our words carefully so that we accurately witness to God’s grace and mercy. Our words can make a difference.
Today’s Prayer
Dear Lord, thank you for the grace you have given us. Help us to speak words of grace and mercy, and teach us to stand up for those who are unfairly judged. Amen.
Thought for the Day
Today I will speak words of grace.
